Who we are
Sedition DJs was born out of our passion for the underground dance scene and a desire to get involved. The story began back in 2001 when we first started putting on parties in London and several of the DJs who played for us then are still part of the Sedition DJs roster today.
First there was Movin’ House in collaboration with the Pear DJs which quickly established itself as a regular fixture on London’s emerging late night bar scene. It wasn’t long before Movin’ House was invited to host our own room at Turnmills and a long association with the famous club soon followed with the creation of Going Places as part of the Gallery. Running for five years, Going Places brought many of the world’s most talented young DJs to the UK for the first time alongside resident Tania von Pear. A particularly memorable night was our second birthday party where we took over the whole of the club with a spectacular line-up including Hernan Cattaneo, Satoshi Tomiie, Aldrin and Syke ‘n’ Sugarstarr. It became one of the busiest nights in the Gallery’s history with over 1,600 people through the door.
Always looking to push things forward and remain true to our underground roots, Sedition co-founded the infamous At Night warehouse parties in 2003. Taking place at Corsica Studios which went on to be awarded ‘Best Small Club’ in DJ magazine, At Night was a very special party and set the standard long before warehouse parties became a permanent part of the London scene. These events really did run by word-of-mouth only and you had to know one of the crew to be invited.
Out of the experience of At Night the Sedition DJs booking agency was born, initially to build on the success of many of the young DJs who had started to make a name for themselves playing at our events. By 2006 Sedition DJs was a fully formed company and we began to book our artists all over London and the UK, and then across the international dance scene.
Sedition DJs also took things to the next level as promoters around the same time and co-promoted a series of large-scale parties at many of London’s major venues. These include house night UP^^, the intimate techno gathering Closer and the ISSST and SLAANG warehouse parties as well as many other projects – further details are included on the Event Management page.
A diverse selection of artists have been part of the Sedition DJs roster since then and just a few of the names we have represented include Switch, Tim Sheridan, Mike Monday, Martin Dawson, Ashley Casselle and Alan Fitzpatrick. In keeping with the Going Place ethos, we have always included DJs from outside the UK on our roster and had a strong international flavour. We have also worked extensively with Ministry of Sound tours over the last three years and many of our DJs have played at Ministry events across the world.
DJ bookings are the heart of Sedition DJs and we bring a forward-thinking attitude to everything we do. As well as representation worldwide, many artists on our roster are also available for remix and production commissions including music synchronisation. Reflecting the changes taking place in the music industry, Sedition DJs now has more of a management role with several of our artists and helps with all aspects of their career.
Music programming forms another part of the equation and we also represent club nights and records labels like Process Recordings for bookings as branded events. Throw event management and consultation, label management and promotion, journalism and writing commissions, legal services and general consultancy into the mix and Sedition DJs cover pretty much every base. A full musical concierge service, in other words.
Since 2000, Matthew Duffield, one half of Sedition DJs, has also had a parallel career as a freelance dance music journalist. As a regular contributor to DJ, IDJ, Knowledge, Deuce and Club On magazines, Matthew has built up an extensive portfolio of work including features, interviews, news stories and album reviews. This includes several front cover stories and he has developed a good reputation as a professional and creative journalist.
There have also been several commissions for CD sleeve notes including Shapeshifters on Defected, Marshall Jefferson and the Keep Diggin’ Recordings series. Artist biographies and press releases are another area of expertise and current clients include the Flow Vinyl label. Matthew is available for writing commissions, while he continues to write album reviews for IDJ and will be the magazine’s Spanish correspondent.
After running Sedition DJs from London for several years, we relocated to Barcelona from October 2010 and are based here most of the time, although we will be maintaining a strong presence in London – our full contact details are included on the Contact page. Sedition DJs also has several partners throughout the world including Mainline Music with whom we work in close collaboration on bookings in Asia.
The choice of Sedition as our name is partly a nod to the inspiration of Seditionaries created by Malcolm McLaren and Vivienne Westwood, but also a reflection of our own principles and celebration of underground music and culture. Sedition by name, sedition by nature is our aim.
So that’s who Sedition DJs are and the story behind our involvement with electronic dance music. To book any of our artists at your event or venue, or discuss any of our other services, please get in touch – there are no online forms to fill in and we prefer the personal touch. Just drop us an email, give us a call or let’s meet online.
